MBTI is founded on the theories of Carl Jung. It identifies 16 distinctive personality types that result from the interactions among preferences on four dichotomies: Introversion-Extraversion; Sensing-Intuition; Thinking-Feeling, and Judging-Perceiving. It pinpoints the extent to which people prefer to focus on their inner or outer world; take in or interpret information; make decisions based on logic or people, and get things decided or stay open to new information.

As the MBTI instrument sorts for preferences, it does not measure trait, ability, or character.
